UNIVERSITY OF WASHINGTON BOTANIC GARDEN
is seeking individual w/ background in horticulture and grounds maintenance that has experience with care and culture of herbaceous perennials.
Position Description -
Under general supervision, perform skilled tasks requiring knowledge of horticulture and maintenance of trees, shrubs, herbaceous perennials and other ornamental plants in the maintenance of the following display gardens:
• Soest Herbaceous Perennial Display Garden
• Marylou Goodfellow Grove
• McVay Courtyard
• Fragrance Garden
Duties include, but are not limited to the following:
Weed management: hand, mechanical, herbicide application (see below)
Turf management: mow, aerate, weed & fertilize areas where turf is maintained
Soil management: cultivation & topdressing with organic soil media in perennial beds
Mulching: applying of wood chip mulch to landscape beds.
Fertilization: applying granular and liquid fertilizers.
Irrigation: setup and operate manual sprinklers for irrigation of collection plantings and assist with scheduling, maintenance and repairs of irrigation systems within gardens
Pruning: seasonal pruning of trees, shrubs, vines and perennials for health and form
Planting and transplanting: installation and transplanting of containerized, balled and burlapped and bareroot trees, shrubs, perennials and annuals. Also, dividing perennials, if needed
Landscape plant grooming: leaf and debris removal, raking, perennial maintenance including dead-heading, cutting-back, staking, etc.
Application of horticultural chemicals: may assist in application of herbicides, insecticides, and fungicides and other materials as prescribed (under supervision of SPOC licensee, if not licensed)
Brush clearing: removal of woody brush and invasive plants, plus follow up controls and site restoration.
Assist in large tree work: provide ground support for tree pruning and removal and chipping of limbs
Hardscapes: may install and maintain interpretive signs, benches, fencing, rock work, and small trails and stairs.
Landscape renovation: site preparation may include soil and plant installation, trail work, rock installation and the ability to follow written prints and instructions.
Use of manual tools and equipment: rakes, hand edger, loppers, shovels, wheelbarrows, weeding forks, hoes, pruning shears and hand-saws, pesticide sprayers, etc.
Operate power and motorized equipment: Examples: weed trimmers, chain saws, backpack blowers, tillers, light tractors, front-end loaders, back-hoe, small trucks, utility vehicles, lawn mowers, stump grinders, and sod cutters.
Direct the work of others: Volunteers Only
Perform related duties as required.
Requirements: Physical ability to do the required work AND one year experience or training involving grounds maintenance, plant care, cultivation and landscape installation OR equivalent education/experience. Possession of a valid State of Washington Driver License and Preferred- WSDA Pesticide License
APMT: July 20 – Sept 18th, 2015 (Possibility of extension)
Hours: 30hrs/wk, M-F schedule negotiable. No weekends
Wage: $17.64/hour. No benefits, except L&I Workers’ Compensation.
