Seattle Parks and Recreation is currently seeking a Senior Gardener to maintain our highly acclaimed Japanese Garden located within the Washington Park Arboretum. The 3 1/2 acre formal garden was designed and constructed under the supervision of world-renowned Japanese garden designer Juki Iida in 1960.
The candidate must have experience in gardening and horticulture, including knowledge and cultural requirements of a broad palette of appropriate plants, stone design and installation, and garden/landscape design. Under the supervision of Park Horticulturist, the Senior Gardener will be the lead on implementing best management practices to the care and maintenance of plant collection, specimen pruning, and ongoing garden operation and landscape feature maintenance.
Job Responsibilities: ~~Perform skilled and complex work in gardening, transplanting, plant collection care, specimen pruning and ongoing maintenance of the Japanese Garden; Prune trees and shrubs emphasis on pine and maples; Able to perform pruning on ladders of up to 16 feet high; Work with Park Horticulturist to maintain the garden landscape; Maintain the koi pond and recirculation system. Supervise gardening staff and volunteers; Schedule and coordinate work with other park crews, as well as contractors, garden partners and volunteer groups that use the Japanese Garden; Work with the garden consultants and supervisor to evaluate the garden periodically for improvements in plant collection and overall garden landscaping. Lead work parties, crew projects and volunteer task assignments; Support and help coordinate special events and fundraising activities (e.g., Moon Viewing, Tea ceremonies). Work effectively and develop rapport with a diverse staff, including cashiers, tea presenters/demonstrators, Parks gardeners and shops, Japanese Garden partners and other associated groups of people, and events staff. Maintain records and plant inventories and prepare required reports; Educate, monitor, and interact with the public. Good knowledge of irrigation systems and operation. Order tools, plants, fish food, and other supplies. Give tours and talks on topics related to the Japanese gardens.
Qualifications: ~~Minimum of three years experience in landscape construction/renovation and/or landscape maintenance, experience in the propagation and maintenance of flowers, plants, shrubs, and trees, (Combinations of education, training and experience will be evaluated on an individual basis for comparability).
WORK ENVIRONMENT/PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
• Required to stand, walk, or bend for extended periods of time.
• Required to lift objects that weigh 50 pounds or less.
• Required to work outdoors in all types of weather.
• Required to work in areas of high vehicular or pedestrian traffic.
LICENSE, CERTIFICATION AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
• Washington Public Pesticide operator's license is required after appointment.
• Current Washington State driver's license.
Ability to perform technically complex aspects of collection and garden maintenance, knowledge and skills in garden plant ID, specimen pruning techniques, and ability to prune and place wide range of plant material aesthetically, 2-3 years work experience in Japanese tree specimen and other plant pruning is desired; Ability to replace stones and maintain shoreline preferable; Moss and turf maintenance and repair; Ability on plumbing, pond circulation system and carpentry works as well weed eradication and other plant care activities. Good working knowledge of irrigation systems and its operation; Experience on maintenance of pond, recirculation systems, Koi fish and wildlife; Knowledge of Japanese garden design and the history; Five or more years work experience in landscape construction/renovation, or in maintenance of Japanese Garden type flowers, plants, shrubs, trees, and turf desirable. Ability to operate all kinds of power equipment safely for extended periods and on varied terrain; Ability to use orchard ladders safely, in water, on firm ground, and up to 16 feet; Work independently and/or with minimal supervision; Ability to communicate with a diverse group of people; Ability to work within a strong team environment; Ability to drive club car-3 wheeled vehicle on streets and in very tight quarters; and Ability to work safely and provide excellent customer service. Ability to use Word, Excel and Outlook.
